Watch Dr. Kanner discuss this important family topic tomorrow Monday morning, November 3rd @ 8:20am on San Diego 6 News In The Morning.
Background: With the elections right around the corner, most adults have been discussing the various propositions and candidates in hopes of solidifying their choices. But what about children? Despite the various problems that our country is facing and how significant the casting of a vote has on our future, teaching children about our political system is a highlight of this time of year. Many schools have had mock elections over this past month or so to help children understand the political system, but it is also important and exciting to introduce politics to children at home.
Many parents complain that it is difficult to get both children and adolescents alike to “talk” to them about their lives which is very common given a child’s wish to become independent and separate from their parents. However, neutral topics and conversations typically feel safe enough for children and adolescents to discuss and can fill the dinner time conversations with constructive information and also can be fun. It is at these times (neutral conversations), when parents can get away with teaching their children about the world at large without getting shut down or told “I already know”. In other words, a “win/win” condition has been created.
When discussing politics and democracy however, it is important to highlight the notion of “choice” and provide them with information about the dynamics behind various parties and issues. This “balance” is important for it makes a child feel as if they have “choices” and solidifies the notion of getting important information before making choices that could affect their future. Furthermore, this type of interaction stresses the notion of research before practice and this concept can be then generalized to other aspects of their lives.
In conclusion, despite the stresses that are implicit this time of year regarding the impact of political choices on the future of our country, introducing the system of politics and having important conversations with one’s children is something that should bring a smile to everyone’s face. One cautionary note however – don’t be surprised if your child takes a completely different political view as you! Remember, they are trying to differentiate themselves from you in order to feel independent. Perhaps this is a good reason why the voting age is matched to the advent of adulthood when children no longer need to take a stand opposed to their parents.
1. Introducing the political system at home is a good idea.
2. Neutral topics are easier to talk about for children then personal issues.
3. Highlighting the notion of “choice” and the importance of their opinion is essential.
4. Emphasizing the concept of research before making a decision is invaluable.
