Mom Arrested

We asked about parents allowing underage drinking in their homes.

I think that parents should be held accountable for underage drinking. If the person is under the age of 21 it is slill illegal in the state of California. __ LIam

Does your production staff realize that your station condoned underage drinking? On last Saturday night's news broadcast, you showed Scott Roberts' father encouraging parents to "supervise" their children's underage drinking since "they are going to do it anyhow." It was irresponsible of you to broadcast his so-called "advice" and I'm embarrassed for you. I hope that an explanation is not necessary, but since you did show Mr. Roberts say what he did, perhaps you do need an explanation - what a shame. I'm sorry that Mr. Roberts lost his son so tragically and much too soon. However, the lesson here is NOT that Mr. Roberts needed to be present as his son consumed alcoholic beverages. The lesson here is that we must teach our kids to make smart and safe choices. Scott Roberts made the wrong choice and it cost him his life. Yes, I'm sure that Mr. Roberts would not have let his son binge drink had he been drinking at home, but the fact that he would have allowed his son drink at all is deplorable. May Scott Roberts rest in peace and I pray that the Roberts family find their own peace during this tough time, but please, stop encouraging underage drinking! -- RJ

I believe teen drinking will happen just about anywhere. I would rather have my child drink at home than drinking at some bonfire or parking lot where they can be charged for being drunk in public or get a DUI driving home. At least with the child home you can supervise and no one leaves and they can sleep it off. -- Mike

parents or young adults should not let under age kids drink at there house at all look what happens, and it does leave every one in a bad situation . and we lose our kids and our future...please dont let kids drink -- Jamie

i believ that if a parent is going to allow under age drinking inside their home they should be held accountable for what ever happens during that time, and in this case a student died, so the mother should be held acountable and charged with second degree murder -- Jose

Yes the parents are responsible! Alcohol kills people and should be illegal. Marijuana is a safe alternative. -- Darrell

I am currently under the legal drinking age and I feel it would be a lot safer to drink in my own home with my parents knowledge. I know if anything happened they would know how to react unlike other people my age. I do not feel it is right for parents to be charged for monitoring how much their children drink if they know that their child are going to drink. -- Danielle

Of course! What parent would want to jepordise their own childrens life, exposing them to drink alcohol. Legal age drinkers that do drink are not capable of much when they drink, imagine a teen. Its disgusting to know that there are parents that allow such thing -- Adam

The allowance of consumption of alcohol by a minor at your house is obviously not legal. However, as a 22-yr old male I can say that the kids will go out and drink. They will find a way to drink. Sometimes, as in my case, they have to drink away from home and can not end up staying the night at that house. I had a BAC of .362 the night I totaled my car. I almost killed 3 friends and myself. Was in the hospital for two weeks. I left the house because we were not allowed to stay there over night. Of course better decisions could have been made but the point is young kids will drink. We had a couple of parents who let us stay at their house and drink and took our keys. No one ever got in a wreck or got a dui or died from binge drinking at those houses. Some sort of plan or something shold beable to be thought out. It is a sad situation but it is inevitable. Alcohol incidents are only rising. The decision we have to make is can we help decrease the outcomes or continue to let things go as they are. -- Noah

I'm so tired of hearing of this.  The death of this youth lies on the hands of those who have restricted our young men in the first place!  They are MEN!  Young yes.  Just like a toddler learning to walk, we don't just let them run out into the street, we take and GUIDE them SAFELY.  The matriotics whom forced laws that restrict a parent from giving this SUPERVISED teaching are responsible for this!

If the 'party' had proper parental guidance, without the fear they would be arrested, this would never have happend !!!

Young men have had rites of passages for thousands of years.  Now it is forced on them to pretend they are still children, when they should be treated as ADULTS and taught how to behave like one!

That same 'child' whom chose to drink too much would be tried as an adult in any court of law.  Quit the double standard!  Start treating them as adults in ALL areas.  By doing this, we can start TEACHING them again, saving lives, and bringing sanity BACK into the USA. -- Sky of Carlsbad
