Tax Hike

We asked your thoughts on the governor's new tax plan?

Hi, I realize that Govenor Arnold Swarzennager. Thinks it's A good idea to increase the sales tax. But i'm sorry to say it's not! Aren't we taxed enough in this state? I believe we are and that is sad. With all the problems with money these days. I don't feel it's A fair decision! Instead of an increase in sales tax. Why not increase the sales tax on Alcohol? Now that is A good decision. Maybe that way... people would buy less and maybe save more lives. Meaning those of the innocent people (Especially kids) who might get in the path of A drunken driver! Just A suggestion! Thank you for your time and good work -- Linas

I think that in order for our economic status to regain it's full productive function. We the citizens are going to have to take a hit in everyday leisures. In order for change to really work steps will have to be taken to clean up the mess. -- Andre

It's ridiculous that the Govenor cannot find better ways to save money thus raising our taxes. I can find a million: lets start with those expensive large law enforcement cars. Who needs a new Ford Expedition? Why do these vehicles keep being upgraded? They're expensive, their maintenance is expensive, not to mention their gas; and who is paying for it? What about those outrageous salaries for state officials? How much do they actually work? Ok and another example of wasted money is the funding on things we absolutley do not need and have been fine without for m! any years. Can you name a few? I hope this e-mail gets to the Terminator. -- Blanca

It seems odd to me that we are cutting firefighters when we have plenty of clerks in the city that could be let go. I would rather suffer some longer lines than to lose houses because we are short of firefighters. -- Dean

I believe that any tax increase will severely hamper the citizens of California, causing them to spend less money on luxury items and driving some, to move out. The first step is to reduce pensions and pay for government workers and curbing spending on alterior items. -- Ethan

I have friends that are already believing Barack Obama will raise taxes and make things worse, well has Arnold ever stopped. The public or consumer has always been the scapegoat for politians and their nice cozy salaries. California needs to stand up. -- Lawrence

In this time of economical hardship I find it hard to believe that the california government wants to take even more money from us in the way of taxes. Maybe they should try cutting their wasteful bloated budgets instead of taking even more money from people who can't afford it. Thankfully I'm still able to barely pay my mortgage each month, but if this happens it just may be the final straw in me keeping my house. So they'll get another forclosure. Good thing they don't run the business I work for, or the company would have closed years ago. -- Jim

The Governor can raise taxes by eliminating the tax exemption status of Mormon and Catholic Churches for lobbying legislation in support of Proposition 8. -- Jay

Well isn't this a fine kettle of fish. People rioting over prop 8. I voted for John McCain, you don't see people rioting in the streets cause he lost. When is the gay community going to understand they have the same rights under a civil union. Why do they need to call it marraige? What they seek is valadation of their lifestyle. We give them equal rights but that doesn't mean we have to agree about their lifestyle choices. The people have spoken twice now with the same outcome. Lets all move on to solving problems that are really important. If you want to do something constructive invent something called GAY MARRIAGE. But please except the people's will and move on. -- Jim

I believe strongly that the Governor is reaching to far to get the money that we are in debt for. such as cutting recreation centers and libraries. That just means that more kids will be on the streets, because they have no where to go. Also charging to get your car fixed that just means more people are going to do whatever they can to aviod fixing their cars and that means more unsafe cars on the streets, and charging for the services for animals, people wont be able to take care of their animals as well as they could before. Govenor Arnold schwarzenegger should find other ways to get money for our debt we cant all afford these higher taxes, especially with these job cuts. -- Joshua

The proposed sales tax will very likely hurt our economy more and have a downward domino effect. People are already cutting back on non-essentials as seen by the decrease in sales at most stores and businesses. Businesses are also watching their costs and looking for places to cut back. As new services become taxable, that will require cuts in other places to continue to pay for vital services, reduce purchases of some services, and jobs will be cut, putting an even greater burden on the state with climbing unemployment. Companies which are able to transfer jobs out of California are already doing so to avoid higher expenses for doing business in California--this will encourage more job drain. PEOPLE WITHOUT DECENT JOBS CANNOT PAY TAXES. Proposing an increase to taxpayers who are already striving to meet ends meet and businesses struggling to stay solvent and keep their employees might sound like a good idea to those who are not personally hurting already, but to those who are, it's cause for concern and implies a lack of awareness of what a significant percentage of the population are experiencing. -- Anonymous
