Prop 8 Ads

We asked you about the ads for and against Prop 8.

I am very upset about 1 ad against PROP 8. I can't believe that the plight many of our ancestors had to endure to receive equal rights in this country could be belittled by comparing our struggles to those struggles of gays and lesbians. That one ad help me to make up my mind on Prop 8. My partner and I are of different races and we know first hand the differences of discrimination. We do not believe we should push our personal choices on others. --  Eva

My opinion on Proposition 8 is simply to vote YES. It's just an insult for our children to see such sin that God does not approve of... so why should we? -- Lucy

Prop. 8 has divided many communities include the one in my home... My sister and I (both straight) support same-sex marriages, my parents don't. It scares me to think that if this law passes, then all our civil liberties are threatened... Prop. 8 is discriminatory and in no way would I want my rights to be taken away based off of the fact that I a Latina, a woman, a Catholic, and straight... who we choose to marry is and should always be a FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT! -- Alma

As far as prop 8 goes and if the ads have swayed my vote. My answer is no, but it has made me utterly disgusted with California voters. It seems that there are so many things in this election that are more important that if gays are allowed to marry. We should be worrying about things that actually affect US citizens and California residents. California should not be focusing on such a small thing. I feel that we should all be thinking of the bigger picture. We need to move forward as a state and a country. I also believe that the ads do confuse people and do sway other votes due to the fact that they lie. Knowledge is power. Before deciding please research for yourself. -- Lauren

When man took God out of our schools, prayer seized to exist. Then students started shooting students. Now man wants to change who can be married, when God said marriage shall be between a man and a woman. I ask you, where do you see this world heading. No, the advertisements and signs had no effect on my decision, we will all answer to God. -- Diane

No,the adds do Not sway or change my vote in any way.Nor do the endorsements or plees of the Mayor,Governor or any other Government official. Frankly I think that the adds on tv are a waste of money and air time.I think that most people have made up their mind on their own. Some of the commercials as of late against Prop 8 are appaling and painful to those that suffered these events many years ago.To compare the two is disgraceful and the creator of this commercial should be ashamed. -- Debbie

The latest "No on 8" TV ad makes the ridiculous comparison between sexual preference and race. Marriage is between one man of any race and one woman of any race. California's previous laws forbidding marriage between people of certain races was indeed discriminatory. However, when same- sex partners start demanding that their deviant unions be given equal standing as marriage, this is what the late U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) observed as dragging down the standards of society by calling deviant behavior "normal." -- Lawrence

Hate is not a family value. Discrimination is not an American value. At least 16,000 gay Californians are now married. Is anyone else's marriage harmed because of it? Don't hate. No on 8. -- Jay

The ads on prop 8 have not swayed my decision, but they have not told the complete truth. It is not a discrimination for the same sex to get married, because that is a lifestyle a person chooses. Discrimination is something you dont choose. Marriage should be kept traditional, because that is what our country was based which is christian beliefs a union between a man and woman. -- Amanda

the No on 8 TV ads have definitely made me want to vote yes on 8. The no on 8 ads said gay marriage wouldn't be taught in schools and it already is being taught to Bay Area kindergartners. Also, why didn't they show any images of gay couples getting married in their ads?? It seemed like they're trying to hide something in their ads so I'm voting Yes on Prop. 8. -- Patrick

Don't choose elective freedoms over God given constitutional freedoms. Choosing "No" on Prop 8 could destroy the seperation of church and state. Marriage is for procreation not perversion! -- Mary

My name is norma, im 17, i can't vote but if i could o would vote no on prop 8... and OBAMA!!!!! all the way... its time for change in the U.S. -- Norma

I know what NO on Prop. 8 means, it means giving human beings the right to marry whoever they are. I am hoping my neighbors are mininformed with their Yes on 8 signs, and not just ignorant and intolerant. -- Diana

The adds have partially influenced me on my choice. I am a supporter of No on prop 8 but, I do come to reason with parts of the Yes on 8 campaign which, have been influenced by there ads . But when it comes down to it I feel strongly on No on prop 8 because I feel if we're trying to pave the future for other states and other country we should demonstrate equality for all. -- Giovanny

I know many people are influenced by political ads. I hear it every day when I'm out and about in my occupation. The supporters of Prop 8 are very much in line with the Republican agenda--they use fear and rhetoric to sway voters. I'm hoping people are smarter than that. -- Brenda

My personal opinon has not wavered by watching the ads. I was a supporter of Prop 22 back in 2000 and naturally support Prop 8 today. I do listen/watch the ads in ernest to judge how articulate and effective the ads may be to convince others - who are undecided. The latest 'No' ad depicting Mormon missionaries as theives and thugs who storm the home of a lesbian couple - stealing their rings and ripping up their marriage license, is a classic example of a shameful ad which has no place in politics. So, I can get riled up on occation, when I know an ad unfairly represents the truth or a particular group.

Ok, the citizens of the great state of California have spoken. The words they speak are clear. These words ring like the shot heard around the world that started this great nation. The voices of Californians’ spoke vociferously.

The people of faith people spoke in thundering voices for the whole country to hear. These voices shouted to the heavens that California and one day the entire country will stop moving forward and the enlightenment will cease.

These words spoken by these people of faith have proven the old adage, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

These people of faith have issued in a new era in American history: an era that propels the country backward to a time when the only true governing body was not the people but the institute where hatred and discrimination produced mindless drones following every word and whim of the ruling tyrants. These tyrants ruled with iron fists and extreme violence.

If we continue down this self-destructive path of blind unquestioning obedience to leaders who fear people those who are not fearful of them and question these leaders. Then what do we attack inter-racial marriages and over turn the court ruling that legalized these marriages?

After overturning inter-racial marriages then do we turn on people who are not Christian, and not white? When does the path to self-destructiveness stop? Is the next step to bring back the Spanish Inquisition and park its headquarters in Sacramento California?

Yes, I used the fallacious logic of the slippery slope as did the proponents for this inhumane proposition.

Humans are supposed to be the superior species on this planet. Americans are supposed to be the freest people and Californians are supposed to be the most enlightened citizens. By approving the systematic discrimination of a select group of other humans these people who call themselves the faithful have only proven they are truly mindless followers of fearful people: God save us all.
